Between six and 17 million years ago, this area was covered in a series of lave flows. Silver Falls park is at the edge of the top layer, and 10 falls have formed as a result of fissuring and snowmelt erosion. South Falls is the highest in the park, and visitors can take a trail that winds behind the fall, and see the basalt layers close up.
