Sewage treatment according to the website below is documented back to 1894 for Springfield, MO. In 1959 a new Southwest Treatment Plant was constructed at its current location on Wilson's Creek. It employed an innovative process involving the Krauss modification to the activated sludge process. In 1966 Springfield became one of the first cities to utilize remote TV camera technology for internal pipe inspection. About 1976, the City began using polyvinyl chloride (pvc) pipe for sanitary sewer construction

The Southwest Wastewater Treatment Plant is capable of continually treating 42.5 million gallons per day of Springfield’s wastewater and 65 million gallons per day for short periods. The average daily flow at this time is approximately 39 million gallons per day. The plant is designed to produce a high quality effluent for discharge into Wilson’s Creek. The plant processes remove approximately 70,000 pounds of pollutants from the wastewater per day before it is discharged.
