The present building constructed in 1835, is on the site of an older church which served the people in the eighteenth century and has strong historic associations for the for the present population of the area both those who worshipped there in previous years and the wider community interested in their local history and environment.

The building ceased to be used for worship on the consecration of the new church nearby; it has subsequently been used for valuable community activities culminating in the advent of the Rush Art Centre who developed the building as a significant resource in recent years. The advent of the Millbank Theatre of the site beside the Arts Centre initiated the creation of a cultural focus for the town in this area, which could be built on for the future.

The existing building is a cruciform structure of nave, transepts and a polygonal choir containing an altar: there is a gallery at the entrance end (accessed via a metal spiral staircase) with offices under; secondary porches and sacristy have been reused to create kitchens and additional storage space; new single storey WC facilities have been build in a matching design against the South transept. The church stands in a relatively small external space with perimeter walls and planting; there is an additional slated single storey building on the Northern boundary and an important tower built into the church structure.

As befits its period of construction, St. Maurs is generally Gothic in character with lancet windows, doors and a steeply gabled slated roof; it is constructed in local stone with the window surrounds picked out in a pinkish concrete plaster, the original external render finish which would have protected the fabric was removed some years ago and the stonework pointed. Internally, the space has a plaster flat Gothic vault to nave and transepts and a timber and tile floor. The roof is supported by substantial timber trusses. The internal walls are plastered with some fine Victorian timberwork. There is figurative stained glass in the chancel area and leaded lights with some coloured glass throughout the rest of the church. Over the years, the old fabric has become worn; the lack of insulation in the external wall was remedied by the provision of dry lining to the interior which has, in turn, caused some decay of the original plaster surfaces.
