Throstle Garth Bridge is in upper Eskdale Cumbria,it spans The River Esk a few yards after it converges with Ling Cove Beck.
The bridge is an ancient Packhorse bridge, and is a testament to it's ancient builders, having stood the ravages of time.
Although it is difficult to be precise in dating packhorse bridges, most were built between 1650 and 1750,and would have replaced simpler wooden structures.
A packhorse bridge is easily recognised by it's simple arch construction narrow width and low parapet walling.
The bridge can be reached by walking from Brotherilkeld at the bottom of Hardknott pass Cumbria to upper Eskdale,a wonderful walk, where the valley is hemmed in my mountains on both sides.
