The Cache La Poudre river derives its name from powder cached by trappers near this spot in 1836. During the winter French fur trappers found it necessary to lighten their load as they were moving north along the front range. They buried their powder and lead shot in a hiding spot. The French word for hiding place is "Cache" and powder is "Poudre".
