Rochester is one of four cities in the nation that can boast and entire park system designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. In 1888, Rochester's Board of Park Commissioners selected Olmstead to design a network of parks and parkways for the city. Olmstead encouraged the Commissioners to set aside large amounts of open space, wanting to focus on the Genesee River. Genesee Valley Park was designed in Olmstead's "pastoral" style, featuring gently rolling terrian along the river, south of downtown. It is one of three parks designed by Olmstead, the other two being Highland Park and Seneca Park. Genesee Valley Park has much to offer, there are hiking trails, as well as access to trails along the river and canal. The park includes two 18 hole golf courses, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, a cricket pitch and many shelters available to rent.
