The F8U-1P made its first flight on 17 December 1956 and joined the fleet in September 1957. The F8U-1P was redesignated RF-8A in 1962.

This RF-8G was accepted by the US NAVY on 17 December 1957 as an F8U-1P and was assigned to VFP-61 at NAS Miramar where it was deployed on the carrier USS Midway.

The Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum is located on MCAS Miramar in San Diego, CA. The civilian entrance is on Miramar Rd.
