Pete Drake was one of the quite giants of Country Music. During his long career in Nashville, Pete was a respected record producer who founded two of Nashville’s most popular record company’s, Stop Record and First Generation Records. But Pete Drake is probably best known as one of Nashville’s most accomplished pedal steel guitar players. His unique sound can be heard on many of Country Music’s best-known recording. In addition to being a top-notch studio musician, he appeared almost every week on The Grand Ole Opry. Pete is resting in the Spring Hill Cemetery in Nashville, Tennessee.

Roddis Franklin “Pete” Drake was born on October 8, 1932 in Augusta, Georgia and grew to become on of the quite giants of Nashville’s Country Music Industry. When he was 18-years old Pete heard the Jerry Byrd play the steel guitar on the Grand Ole Opry. This so inspire him that he purchased his own steel guitar and went on to become one of the best-known pedal steel guitars in Nashville. Pete played steel guitar for such Country Music Stars as Lynn Anderson (Rose Garden), Charlie Rich (Behind Closed Doors) and played steel guitar on five of Elvis Presley’s movie soundtracks. Pete met George Harrison of the Beatles at Bob Dylan's New York home, and Harrison was so impressed that he invited him to England to work on All Things Must Pass. In turn, Harrison persuaded fellow Beatle Ringo Starr to come to Nashville to produce his Beaucoups of Blues album with Drake in 1970. This marked the first time a member of the Beatles had recorded in the United States. In addition to being one of the most accomplished musicians in Nashville, Pete Drake also was a very well respected record producer and he founded Stop Records and First Generation Records. Pete was inducted into the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame in 1987. Pete Drake died in Nashville, Tennessee, on July 29, 1988 and is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery. His grave marker is inscribed "His Courage, His Smile, His Talent and His Love, Warms Our Hearts." His headstone is inscribed "For Pete's Sake."
