Sir Moses Montefiore (see also here) made his fortune in investment banking, so successfully that retired from business at the age of forty. Subsequently he turned his attentions to philanthropy, the civil and political rights of Jews in England, and the establishment of a Jewish homeland.

He was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1838
