Known for multitude of shipwrecks immediately offshore, gold panning just after World War II, a popular hippie hangout in the late 1960s/early 1970s, and the setting of a novel of the same name by James O. McNamee. Weather tends to be wet, moist, foggy, but don't let that deter you. Beach is spectacular, huge, remote, and wild.
To get there, follow Highway 4, the "Pacific Rim Highway" west from Port Alberni on Vancouver Island; Port Alberni isa about 45 minutes to one hour north of Nanaimo, a terminus of the BC Ferries system.
At the Tofino-Ucluelet junction, turn right, and in a few minutes you'll be in the Long Beach Unit of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.
To get to Florencia Bay, turn off for the Wikaninnish Interpretive Center and follow the signs to Florencia Bay. Park your vehicle (if you have one) in the Florencia Bay parking lot and take a short walk to the beach headlands.
