The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument includes three units (Sheep Rock, Painted Hills, and Clarno) and is spread over 14,000 acres in north-central Oregon along the John Day River Valley. The Monument is one of North America’s most significant paleontological research areas. It preserves portions of the Clarno Formation (50 to 35 million years ago), the John Day Formation (37 to 20 mya), the Picture Gorge Basalt Sub-Group (16 mya - part of the Columbia Plateau Flood Basalts), the Mascall Formation (15 to 12 mya) and the Rattlesnake Formation ( 8 to 60 mya). The main interpretive facilities are located in the Sheep Rock Unit and include the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center and the Cant Ranch Museum. In addition there are interpretive trails and signs at the Foree Area, the Blue Basin Area, and the Mascall Overlook.
Coordinates are at Monument Sign on U.S. Hwy. 26 at the SW corner of the Sheep Rock Unit. There are additional entrances at the SE corner of the unit (U.S. Hwy. 26) and at the north edge on the unit (Ore. Hwy. 19).
