This courthouse is in beautiful downtown Van Wert. The lovely design of the courthouse itself is flanked by two Cannons, commemorating the Civil War and honoring the GAR on the front lawn of the courthouse.
If you drive around back of the courthouse, you will also encounter two rather amusing "no trespassing" signs that instruct you to stay off the roof.
Van Wert county is surprisingly beautiful, considering it's located in tneh middle of what used to be known as the "The Great Black Swamp." Earliest pioneers here had to drain and build up the area to make it useful at all to them.
The current courthouse was built in 1874-1876, and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
