The Steamer John Porter arrived in the Ohio River port of Gallipolis, Ohio, on Aug. 18, 1878, bringing passengers from New Orleans who were infected with the yellow fever virus, causing an epidemic that claimed 66 lives, the last outbreak in Ohio.

This unique monument consists of a "broken rocker shaft of the Steamer John Porter that brought yellow fever to Gallipolis from New Orleans Aug. 18, 1878, causing 66 deaths." It was donated by Charles A. Hill, engine builder.
