This entrance arch was built by the citizens of Pierce County when they made a gift of the fort property to the United States Army at the beginning of WWI.
The following information is from the plaque located next to the arch:
"In 1917 the workers who constructed Camp Lewis donated the materials and labor to construct the main gate. The arch was built of fieldstone and logs to resemble the blockhouses which once protected the early settlers of the Pacific Northwest. The workers subscribed some $4,000 to the construction of the main gate which was presented to the U.S. government in November of 1917. Almost immediately the gate became a landmark of the cantonment and was the subject of photographs, postcards and artwork.
