Much detail went into the building of this memorial, dedicated in 1987. Twenty-six bronze reliefs, depicting life at sea, can be found on the sides of the fountains. A statue sculpted by Stanley Bleifeld, the Lone Sailor, watches from the edge of the plaza. And, if you stand at the side of the memorial opposite the National Archives, the arrangement of the flagpoles, fountains and convex floor gives the distinct impression of looking forward from a ship’s bow. Pretty neat.
