A hilly homestead between Galena and Hampton, Illinois. This area was booming with lead mines when William Sherrard moved here. Perhaps he hoped to become rich by finding a good mine on his property. Or maybe he came just to get a new start on some good farmland. Whatever his reason, the family was happy here for 155 years.

In 2003, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources purchased the Sherrard Homestead as an addition to Witkowsky State Wildlife Area. All of the buildings have been removed. Only the gravel lane remains.
