The Savior's (Spasskaya)Tower, located at the west side of Red Square, is one of 19 in the walls of the Kremlin. It's the most ornate and the only one with a clock. The current clock was built by Butenop Brothers in 1852 to replace one designed in 1625 by Christopher Galloway that in turn replaced a still earlier one.
The clock occupies three stories of the ten story tower and has three separate units, one drives the clock, one strikes the hours and one sounds the chimes. The clock was originally wound by hand, but since 1937 it has wound itself automatically twice daily.
The four clock faces are 6.12 meters in diameter and each hour hand is almost 3 meters long. The ringing mechanism is equipped with 10 quarter-hour bells and one bell to chime the hour. The chimes sound each quarter hour playing the Russian National Anthem.
