The Wilmington National Cemetery opened in 1867. The initial internments were mostly bodies removed from the Wilmington City cemetery, Fort Fisher, Fort Johnson and the surrounding area. Nearly two-thirds of the initial internments were were for unknown soldiers from various Civil War battles in the area. The cemetery is now the final resting place for about 6200 individuals and is closed to new internments. The cemetery is open from sunrise to sunset.
