I had been in a motorcycle accident recently and dislocated and fractured my arm, but we had won this trip from a previous geocaching trip to North Florida and it was about to expire. So I thought I was okay enough to paddle down river, what I didn't know was that the river was rather low and I had to drag the large metal canoe across 200'+ of limestone bottom. I have a fiberglass canoe at home but didn't bring it since we had a free trip per the contest. So it was a challenge, but after the initial low areas it was a nice run. We ran into kayakers who started near the bridge off 27 which would have been a much better put in, but we didn't know this and the owner didn't tell us this. He just warned us that it was low in some area's not that it was completely devoid of water! We stopped at 2 springs, first was Poe which had a nice spring to swim in and cool off, and then at Lily where we meet up with "Ed" the local area hermit dressed in only a loin cloth, he said that the only reason he wore that was so he wouldn't get into trouble. We ended up at Rum Island and meet our host that took us back to the outpost. Overall it was a nice day and good run except for the beginning was a bit rough.
Please see website for other runs and the costs:

Parking/put-in/launching information:
The parking is located next to the Sante Fe Canoe Outpost

Paddling conditions to be expected:
The water had a small current to it when we were in open water. Had about 500' we had to canoe through thick water hyacinths.

Difficulty of the trip:
At first it was bad, soon after take off we were walking and then pulling it over the rocks, but after that it was a nice trip. Clear water and a moderate current, for more advanced canoe needed than normal. But would change if water level goes back up.

Length of trip: 7 miles and it was supposed to be approx. 3 hours but took us 4 1/2

Portages:
We had to get out and walk the canoe about 8 times due to shallow water. Then we had to drag it across limestone bottom about 200' total, 100' one time, 50' another and about 25' two times.

Permits required:
$36.00 for the two of us, there is other options available, please see website link for more information.

Type of trip:
We went downstream and was picked up at Rum Island and transported back to the outpost.

Take-out Coordinates: N 29° 50.016 W 082° 40.727

Other information:
Saw LOTS of turtles and mullet, some billy goats and a red tailed hawk. After hauling canoe through one section of no water, a couple that was out collecting fossils told us that a deer had run across the river behind us but we didn't see it. We stopped by Lily spring and saw "Ed" who is a local hermit that wears only a loin cloth. (See Pictures)
