The DeKalb County Courthouse boasts a still-functioning brass Master Clock. It is located on the first floor, and is viewable by the public when the courthouse is open. It originally controlled the exterior pediment clocks (shown in the "waymark picture") and 22 secondary clocks by means of air tubes. Once every alternate minute, a puff of air is sent through the system to the air-diaphragms in the secondary clocks. On the other alternate minutes, a valve is opened on the master clock to release the air and equalize the pressure in the tubing.
The system was manufactured by the Hahl Automatic Clock Company of Chicago.
The pediment clocks have been electrified in recent years. There are 4 pediment clocks, one on each side of the Courthouse. The master clock still keeps time, and if you watch closely, at the top of each minute, you can see the bellows change.
