From "Tacoma's Historic Downtown -- A Cybertour" on historylink.org:
Hotel Bostwick, South 9th Street at St. Helens and South Broadway: This small, triangular hotel was built in 1889 by Dr. Henry Clay Bostwick, Tacoma’s first practicing physician and later bank president. Local members of the Loyal Legion of the United States, an early veterans group, once assembled here and in 1893 supposedly launched the tradition of standing and doffing one’s hat during the national anthem.
The building now features a Tully's coffee that's a great place for kicking back. It is also home to specialty retail shops and antique stores. Above the businesses are apartments. It's location is ideal - in the heart of the theater district and Antique Row.
