This small cricket and recreation ground has an interesting history.
It was donated by local Financier
Martin Coles Harman who purchased the Island of Lundy (also a
National Trust Property and styled himself "King of Lundy". He even had some
coins minted with his portrait.
He purchased this seven acre field in Chaldon, and presented it to the national trust for use by Chaldon's residents as a sportsfield. It is now used by Chaldon Cricket Club and for local celebrations.
The six boulders represent him and his five brothers, and are granite from the island of Lundy. There is a lot of information on the sign in the field, a copy of which I will attach.
He also had five sisters, but they don't seem to figure in the story!
