The Clinton Power Station began construction in the mid-70's. Originally owned by Illinois Power it is now owned by a subsidiary of the giant electric utility Exelon. I used to work at Clinton, from Jan 1990 to June 1997. I quit Illinois Power to move to St. Louis, and get out of the nuclear power industry.
The heart of CPS is a GE designed BWR-6 reactor (6th generation boiling water reactor). CPS has numerous safety systems (as do all the other US nuclear power plants), and prior to a recent power update was cabable of generating approx 980 megawatts of electricity. That number is now higher.
CPS is located approximately six miles east of Clinton IL in DeWitt County. At the time I was there it employed about a thousand people. The payroll is much lower now.
