In all, a total of 64 Medals of Honor were earned in action at Petersburg, Virginia, in the period from March 25 to April 3, 1865, fifty-four of them on April 2 alone. On that date Sergeant Robert Gardner, fighting valiantly and clearing his way using his musket as a club, was among the first to enter Fort Gregg.
