Built with prison laborers from the Alton Penitentiary (
Waymark WMRH6), the then Joliet Penitentiary served continuously until 2002.
Its imposing architecture provided the back drop in 1980 for the release of "Joliet" Jake Blues (played by John Belushi) in the movie "The Blues Brothers."
Since then, the Joliet Correctional Center has been included in the Oliver Stone film, "Natural Born Killers" and was the prison to escape during the first season of "Prison Break" on the FOX Network.
The future of the prison is still unknown. Redevelopment of this property in the rapidly developing city is not out of the question, but preservation for tours or Hollywood productions is more likely.
