This is the blocked entrance to the Ford Slope Mine on Cougar Mountain in Newcastle, WA. It was built at a slope so trains could travel down and bring the coal out. At one time, there were 11 locomotives working in this tunnel. The elevation of the mine opening is at 1740 feet in elevation, and it descends to 200 feet below sea level. Even though the entrance is blocked, toxic gas continues to escape and there are warning signs posted about the danger of lingering near the opening. There is an informational kiosk nearby detailing the history of the mine. This was a bustling coal mining area 100 years ago, but the industry died when the coal ran out. The mountain is riddled with mine shafts, many of which have and continue to collapse.
