Originally constructed in 1898 for the family of Col. Seth Mason Richards, it was considered one of the most elegant and costly homes in the state. Through the generosity of the Richards family, this house was donated to our town for conversion to a library in 1963.
Since 1956, Richards Free Library has annually presented the prestigious Sarah Josepha Hale award to a New England author who has made a significant contribution to American Literature.
