The Confederate Memorial stands on the grounds of the Giles County Courthouse in Pearisburg, Virginia. It was near there that Confederate General Henry Heth defeated Union Colonel Rutherford B. Hay and the 23rd Ohio Infantry in May 1862. This is the same Rutherford B. Hayes that went on to become the 19th President of the United States.
The inscription on the monument are the words of President Jefferson Davis:
"It is the duty we owe to the dead, who died for us but whose memories can never die. It is a duty we owe to posterity to see that our children shall know the virtues and rise worthy of their sires. Jefferson Davis."
