William H. Pierce was a member of the local Rotary Club and owner of large amounts of land in the Christiansburg Area. Mr. Pierce had The Oaks constructed for himself and his wife, Julia in 1893. Pierce was Educated at Washington and Lee University and VPI and he held the office of commandant at a military school in Washington, D.C., before returning to Christiansburg to found the Pierce Insurance Agency. He and his wife raised six of their seven children at The Oaks and they live here until their death. Mr. Pierce died on May 6, 1949 and left the property to his wife and named his son Edwin the executor of his estate.

Julia Pierce continued to live at The Oaks until her death on November 25, 1968 at the age of 99. Edwin Pierce eventually relinquished his rights to the house and property to his brother William who retained control of the property until his death in 1976, at which time his wife Margaret inherited the estate. Margaret eventually sold the estate to Thomas and Mary Hardie, with the stipulation that the house should NOT be turned into a restaurant and that the 300-year old Oak Trees not be destroyed. The Hardie’s eventually sold the property to Thomas and Margaret Ray who have operated The Oaks as an elegant four-diamond bed and breakfast since 1989.
