The Art Museum’s first home (the buff building) was designed by American architect Phillip Johnson in 1972; the colorful second building, designed by Mexico City architects Ricardo Legorreta, was added in 2006. Both buildings are situated on the harbor, with windows and skylights designed to take advantage of both the strong South Texas sunlight and harbor views.
A strong Hispanic element runs through both the permanent and temporary exhibitions -- the collections focus on contemporary works by Texas and Mexican artists, with some pieces from Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona. The permanent collection is pretty thin, so if there's not a temporary exhibition it might not be worth the cost of admission. But if there is a show going on, it is most definitely worth it.
