St Augustine's Catholic Church was constructed in 1866, using brick fired locally, to serve the boom mining town of Austin. For the first service on Christmas Eve in 1866, $1 admission was charged, supposedly to limit the number of persons attending to the capacity of the building. However, this may have been a fund raiser to complete the roof.
The population of the town has dwindled from over 10,00 to a few hundred but the old church remains. It is the oldest Catholic Church still standing in Nevada. The Gothic Revival Italianate style structure, contains significant architectural and decorative features including murals, marbling, painted flooring and a 19th century pipe organ which is still in place.
Services are no longer held here and the church has been sold to a private developer. Restoration as a community center and new fundraising activities are under way.
