The Apex Fire Department is located in Apex, North Carolina, in the southwest corner of Wake County. Since incorporating in 1939, the department has undergone tremendous growth and change along with the Town of Apex. First settled in the 1860s by a number of private landowners, the town was incorporated in 1873. In the late 1930s the population hovered just under 1,000. In 1990 it had grown to almost 5,000, and in the year 2000 it broke the 20,000 mark. Some projections place population at nearly 64,000 by 2010. This phenomenal growth is posing challenges for everyone including the fire department. They are currently a combination department with
14 full-time paid staff members,
18 part-time paid staff members and about
40 volunteers.
The Apex Fire Department has 3 fire stations, located on North Salem Street, Hunter Street, and New-Hill Hollemon Road in New Hill.
Fire personnel are assigned to one of 3 shifts that work 24-hour rotations. Each shift has 7 full-time personnel, as well as part-time firefighters who work Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., excluding holidays.
The Fire Chief and Fire Marshal work a 40-hour work week. We also have a full-time Administrative Specialist and a Staffing Specialist.
