The Paradise area is the main destination for most visitors entering the park through the Nisqually entrance. Unlike the other park visitor centers, Paradise is open year round, although some mornings in the winter it may be closed for snow removal.
The building was built in 1966 and stands out grandly, perched on the side of the mountain. Although it doesn't match the historic rustic park-style of the other Paradise buildings, its shape and stature are appropriate for its location. It will be torn down for additional parking area in 2008 or 2009 when the nearby visitor center under construction is completed.
Inside you'll find interpretive exhibits on the history, geology and ecology of the mountain and the park. There's also a restaurant with casual dining and a gift shop. Continue up to the top viewing area of the building for 360 degree views of the mountain and surrounding Paradise Valley and a seat next to the massive center fireplace.
Paradise is one of the starting off points for people climbing to Mount Rainier's summit. It is known for its vast meadows of wildflowers which are at their best in July. The Wonderland trail and Pacific Crest trail can be accessed here, along with a myriad of other less involved trails. A favorite is the short 1/4 mile Glacier Vista trail which takes you to an overlook of the Nisqually glacier.
Other spots to visit at Paradise are the historic Paradise Inn, the Guide House and the Ranger Station. The Inn, originally built in 1917 is currently undergoing renovations and is slated to re-open for the 2008 season. It has 118 rooms, a restaurant and a lounge.
