The first windmill in Texas was built by the Rudolph Witte family in Goliad. Witte installed two grinding stones that he had imported from Germany through the port of Indianola. Fred Meiss, Sr. and Otto Fiek used parts of the windmill, including the grinding stones, to build the mill seen here in 1870 on Spring Creek. It was donated to the City of Victoria and moved to its current site, Memorial Square, Victoria’s oldest cemetery, in 1935.
