The tank is located at the corner of Kildaire Farm Road and Pleasants Avenue. In 1960, this tank replaced a small, four-legged, water tank which stood just south of the Academy Street Post Office. (The cement foundations of the old tank are visible from the rear parking lot of the Post Office, on a residential lot.)

Because this 45-year-old tank requires a lot of maintenance, and with additional capacity being needed, the Town of Cary plans to replace it with a larger tank on Field Street, just east of the downtown area.

Tank Statistics:
Year Built: 1960
Elevation at base: 508 feet above sea level
Overall height: 250 feet
Capacity: 300,000 gallons
Design: Multi-legged
Site: 0.31 acres, purchased by Town in 1959.

Current status: In service, but scheduled to be demolished in late 2007 or early 2008. The radio antennas atop the tank formerly served the Cary Police Department, but now are used by an Amateur Radio UHF repeater.
