"The original name of the beach was Praia de Lourido or Area Loura (a name that comes from the color of its sand), but since the 1930s the name Praia América has been promoted due to the construction of the Hotel América and the first urbanization of the place. The name soon gained popularity.

With a total extension of 1,700 meters, it borders Panxón beach (from which it is separated by the Muíños river ), a river that also acts as a boundary between the places of Vilameán (Capital of the municipality of Nigrán ) and Area (neighborhood that borders that of Praia América), of the parishes of Nigrán (San Fiz) and San Pedro respectively.

According to the IGE , in 2022 it had 239 inhabitants (131 men and 108 women ).

Coastline
Lourido is one of the beaches of Nigrán, bathed by the Atlantic Ocean . It has been awarded the Blue Flag of the Foundation for Environmental Education on several occasions , in recognition of the quality of its waters and services; the last one in 2015 .

Lourido is located in an urban environment; with this beach, several places or neighborhoods from different parishes border, however, all belonging to the municipality of Nigrán. Being the neighborhood of Praia América, the one that has the most direct contact with the beach. Area Loura presents conditions of waves and moderate winds. From its beaches of white sand and fine sand, the places of Baiona , Panxón and Monteferro can be seen among others, in addition to the Estelas islands , which due to their ecological richness have been declared spaces to be protected by the Natura 2000 Network . In addition, a pedestrian promenade runs along its entire length, with garden areas and a footbridge along the Muíños river, whose mouth, located in the parish of Nigrán (San Fiz) acts as the edge between the beaches of Area Loura and Praia de Canido. So we would be talking about two beaches, belonging to each parish, but which have a common border located in a third parish, which is between the two others.

Climate
Playa América, like Nigrán, benefits from a microclimate characterized by mild winter temperatures and abundant sunshine during the summer, the season in which the greatest influx of tourists occurs. The temperatures recorded throughout the year are mild, averaging around 10 °C in January and 20 °C in July. Southwest winds bring abundant rainfall , especially between the months of October and April (1,700 – 1,900 mm. annually).

History
In 1927 Manuel Lemos , a businessman who had emigrated to Argentina, renamed Lourido Beach as Praia América in order to attract tourism and turn Nigrán into the Nice of Galicia. He also promoted the construction of granite villas for wealthy people in the region, founded a luxury hotel and a social center ('Pavillón Bleu') .

Parties
The patron saint of Praia América is A Virxe do Carme, a chapel located on Monte Lourido (a small peninsula with the rank of place, belonging to the same parish as Praia América, that of San Pedro )."
