"The oldest building of all those surrounding the Plaza de España is the Co-Cathedral of Santa María la Mayor. The discovery of some Visigothic artifacts suggests that this was the site of the famous mother cathedral of Santa María de Jerusalén, with its baptistery, the bishop's palace, and the atrium that connected them. The truth is that, after the city was reconquered, a chapel was built here and gradually expanded.

Today, it appears to us as an archaic Gothic complex, that is, a very massive and squat temple with simple pinnacles at the chevet. Its interior features three naves, the central one wider, with slightly pointed arches. Since the 17th century, all three naves have been covered with groin vaults. Previously, the naves had a wooden truss ceiling in the Mudejar style. Only in some chapels, and especially in the chevet, the main chapel, and the sacristy, do Gothic tracery arches remain. The church originally had paintings on the walls, such as We can see it in a fragment that is still preserved and in which the mass of Saint Gregory is represented.

The chapels belonged to the city's most noble families. Until the mid-19th century, the church was a burial place for the city's nobles. Thus, to one side of the sanctuary and in the current sacristy, we can see the tombs of Don Diego de Vera y Figueroa and his wife, Doña Marina Gómez de Figueroa. In the initial section of the sanctuary, we can also contemplate the image of Cristo de la O, a pathetic late Gothic Christ who is the titular image of the local penitential brotherhoods. It is located on the site of the tomb of Doña Eleanor of Austria, sister of Charles V, who was queen of Portugal and France."
