Billionaire businessman Dan Gilbert has added yet another downtown Detroit property to his collection: the Buhl Building.

Bedrock, Gilbert's real estate firm, announced Monday that it has purchased the ornate 27-story office tower at 535 Griswold St., as well as an adjoining 652-space parking garage. The sale price was not disclosed.

The Buhl Building dates to 1925 and was designed in Romanesque and neo-Gothic styles by architect Wirt Rowland. It has 57 tenants, including offices for SMART bus service and the Michigan Attorney Grievance Commission. Domino's Pizza has a carryout location on the ground floor.

Gilbert's Bedrock is the biggest private property owner in downtown Detroit, with more than 90 properties under its control. The company has completed or is undertaking significant renovation work in many of the older buildings that it purchases.

“As Bedrock always does for our iconic building acquisitions, our strategy for the Buhl Building balances the importance of respecting its history and architecture with ensuring a smooth transition for all of the existing tenants," Bedrock CEO Jim Ketai said in a statement. "We also look forward to improving common areas, technology and implementing modern building infrastructure in the building and garage."

The Buhl Building had been owned by a limited liability company. It last changed hands in 1998 for $34.5 million, according to city records.

Crain's Detroit reported last year that a Vancouver real estate investor sought to buy and renovate the Buhl Building and the parking garage, but that $75-million proposed deal fell through.
