"From the early 16th century, there is documentary evidence of the existence of the first modest houses and Town Halls in Trujillo's Plaza Mayor.
In addition to the majestic Church of San Martín de Tours in our featured photo, next to these buildings stood other private structures of two or three floors with arcades consisting of semicircular arches on pillars. These arcades, called the Bread, Vegetable, and Meat portals, indicate the commercial activities that took place here. Such was the importance of these activities that in 1465, Henry IV granted the "Free Market" to be held on Thursdays of each week.

Among these popular buildings, noble buildings were interspersed until they finally formed the so-called Public Square or Plaza del Arrabal de San Martín, in the center of which the Rollo or Pillory was erected, now located on the outskirts.

Finally, in 1929, the square was decorated with the equestrian statue of Francisco Pizarro, donated by the widow of the American sculptor C. Rumsey.

The noble buildings found in the square are:

Palace of the Conquest.
Old Town Hall.
Palace of Juan Pizarro de Orellana.
Palace of the Quintanilla Family or Casa del Peso Real.
Palace of the Chaves and Sotomayor Family.
Parsonage of the San Martin Parish.
House of the Chain or House of the Chaves and Orellana Family.
Palace of the Dukes of San Carlos.
Palace of Piedras Albas.
Palace of the Marquises of Santa Marta.
Currently, much of the plaza is home to hospitality businesses such as bars and restaurants, as well as the tourist information office and other tourist-oriented businesses."
