HISTORIC SAN RAMON VILLAGE
San Ramon Village began in the 1860's at the junction of the county road (San Ramon Valley Blvd.) and Old Crow Canyon Road (Deerwood Road). Access to Hayward was an important reason for its location. The village included a grammar school, church, homes, hotels, stores, meeting hall, Chinese laundry, jail, blacksmiths, and saloons.
The San Ramon General Store for 50 years was owned first by Henry Hurst and son and later by William and Lena Pereira. It was a gathering place for the community that sold a variety of merchandise, served as the post office, and hosted late night card games. From stagecoach stop to gas pumps, the store changed to fit the times. In 1911 the San Ramon Hall was built to hold meetings, school programs, plays, and dances. By the 1960's most of the area's buildings had been raised.
