Lock and Dam #24 was constructed between 1936 and 1940 and went into operation May 12, 1940. The dam is 1340 feet long with 15 tainter gates. Dam #24 was the first dam in the Upper Mississippi River 9-foot Channel Project to be built without roller gates instead the dam used the most technologically advance at the time tainter gates. The lock is a single lock 600 feet long and 110 feet wide. The lock and dam have far exceeded their design life of 50 years and are undergoing renovations.
