Lock and dam #24 went into operation May 12, 1940. The lock and dam were part of the original 9-foot navigation project along the Upper Mississippi River. The lock is a single lock 600 feet long and 110 feet wide. The accompanying dam is 1340 feet long with 14 tainter gates.
