How anyone could claim to know the "midpoint" is beyond me. Over the years, Route 66 altered paths so many times that in reality there have been many midpoints. However, when you're close to the half way point, when there's nobody else laying claim to the title, and when you have a commercial interest to do so then why not put up a sign outside your cafe if it's going to draw traffic?
Honestly, for all my skepticism about this being the actual midpoint, I was looking forward to getting here. It's a symbolic milestone for those of us who are driving from one extreme in Chicago to the opposite extreme in Santa Monica. When I got here it meant something and I wanted to capture the moment to share with my family, hence the default picture above.
So, actual midpoint or not, I'm glad this sign exists.
