This site used to be a dumping ground for construction rubble and sand was extracted there. The dumping activities ended in 1992, after which recreational development of the site started in 1993. The result is an open area with plenty of space for various forms of recreation. Part of the shore is designed as a sandy beach. There are also cycling and walking paths and fishing piers. Marsh vegetation has been developed on the western side and behind the viewing screen, a sand martin wall has been erected by the Utrecht bird watch, Nieuwegein/IJsselstein department, with the help of sponsorship funds. In winter you can enjoy goldeneyes, common mergansers and mergansers, while in spring and summer you can hear reed warblers and reed buntings singing.
