The triumphal arch is one of the most significant buildings in the city and one of the best examples of arches in the entire Puuc area. It is very ornate with one of the facades, the east, simpler than the other. It consists, on the east façade, of a large mask of Chaac.

Arco triunfal

Sign

Triumphal Arch

This construction is an outstanding example of the late architectural style, called Puuc Mosaic. Much of it has been preserved in fairly good condition, including the two small rooms flanking the vaulted arch; only the staircases and the cresting have been largely restored. The arch formalizes the passage from what appears to be a residential complex of a high status family, to a central plaza with buildings of political-dynastic functions. The axis of the vaulted portico runs northwest-southeast. The northwest façade is decorated with a nariguda mask at the top of the north corner and two huts over the entrances to the side rooms, flanked on both sides by lattice panels. Each of the simulated doors of the small huts contained, recessed, a seated human figure. Only the feathers of their plumes and stone spikes are preserved. The projecting stones on the sides of the arch must also have supported anthropomorphic stupa sculptures.
