The palace

The Palace went through at least twelve construction periods until it acquired the form we now admire. The earliest structures are located on the second level. Initially, the palace consisted of two buildings and a patio; later, construction activity increased, with the construction of 67 rooms, 7 patios and several stairways and corridors that allowed fluid circulation throughout all areas of the complex. In this building you can notice typical elements of the Puuc architectural style, among them the Chaac masks, god of rain among the ancient Mayas, and the carved stone mosaics. Different activities took place in El Palacio: in the West Patio ceramic objects and metates were found, indicating that food was prepared there. The Central Patio must have been the focus of administrative activity, while the East Patio was occupied as a place of habitation for people of high status. This architectural complex was built between 750-1000 AD.
