The Ballast Bank was built from 1840 by the Duke of Portland to protect the new harbour in the Ayrshire town of Troon from storms blowing in from the Firth of Clyde. It was named due to being constructed mostly from ballast cargo ships, and now forms a grassy barrier between the coast and the town centre which lies to the east.

A viewfinder was placed on the bank by Troon Community Council in 1983 and consists of a steel disc upon a stone cylinder surrounded by a stepped viewing platform. The view takes in the coastline from Ayr to the south, westwards across the sea to the Isle of Arran, and inwards across the town.
