The mosaic shows a head shot of Andrew Weatherall with his bare arms crossed and covered in tattoos.

Flanking the mosaic are the words 'Fail We May, Sail We Must'. This phrase was tattooed on both his arms and became known as his trade mark outlook on life.

His career started as a DJ but he moved on to other areas of music and had great success producing groups and re-mixing pieces of music.

He came across his famous phrase when talking to a young fisherman who wanted to know about Andrews life as a DJ. Andrew dismissed his life as being unimportant and wanted to know what life was like as a fisherman. He told him that when he was 18 on a fishing trip in a force nine gale, his father, the captain, broke his leg so he had to captain the ship to return to safety.

Andrew was impressed by how much responsibility the fisherman had at such a young age and asked him if there were days when he didn't want to go to sea. The fisherman replied 'fail we may, sail we must'.

Andrew was so impressed by this philosophy that he had his arms tattooed to serve as a reminder of a way to live your life. The phrase became famous to his fans.

The mosaic

The mosaic is on the outside wall of 'Sheaf St.', a café, a bar, and a multi-functional event space.

Andrew Weatherall was booked to do a DJ slot at Sheaf St in March 2020 with Sean Johnston. Sadly Andrew died from Pneumonia 2 weeks before the event and Sean Johnston did it solo. This turned out to be the last event at Sheaf St. before Covid-19 triggered lock down.

In 2021 Andrew Ashton, a fan of Andrew Weatherall, contacted the club to commission the mosaic.

Sheaf St. managed to get some funding from Leeds Inspired and the In Good Company fund.

The mosaic now stands as a permanent tribute to Andrew Weatherall.
