"La catedral de Santa María de Gerona se encuentra en el punto más alto de la ciudad; posee la nave gótica más ancha del mundo, con una anchura total de 22,98 metros. Su construcción se inició en el siglo xi en estilo románico, siguiendo en el siglo xiii con el gótico, conservando tan solo el claustro románico del siglo xii y la torre de la misma época que data de 1040; se terminó en el siglo xviii. Es Bien de Interés Cultural.
A su lado se encuentra el antiguo Palacio episcopal, sede en la actualidad del Museo de Arte de Gerona.
Desde los comienzos del cristianismo por toda esta zona, la ciudad de Gerona fue sede de un obispado que se asentó en la iglesia de Santa María, regentando al mismo tiempo el santuario del mártir diácono San Félix; este santuario se había edificado sobre la tumba de dicho mártir, cerca de la muralla de la ciudad. Esta pequeña iglesia de San Félix recibió el culto cristiano en sustitución de la de Santa María cuando los árabes se apropiaron de ella para convertirla en mezquita mayor, en el año 717. Más tarde, en el 785, Gerona fue conquistada por los francos, entonces bajo la autoridad de Carlomagno. En el 882 se formó la primera comunidad de canónigos y en el 908 la iglesia fue de nuevo consagrada.
La fachada es barroca y fue construida en 1730. La escalinata central de acceso se construyó en 1607. En el exterior de la catedral se conserva el pórtico gótico de San Miguel, situado al norte, y el pórtico de los Apóstoles al sur, del siglo xiv y al que se le añadieron algunas esculturas en el siglo xv. Hay que destacar también la catedral episcopal románica del siglo xi situada sobre la capilla mayor; el retablo mayor, de plata dorada y esmalte, obra maestra de la orfebrería gótica realizada por Bartomeu entre 1320 y 1357."

"The Cathedral of Santa María de Gerona is located at the highest point of the city; it has the widest Gothic nave in the world, with a total width of 22.98 meters. Its construction began in the 11th century in Romanesque style, continuing in the 13th century with the Gothic, preserving only the Romanesque cloister from the 12th century and the tower from the same period that dates back to 1040. It was completed in the 18th century. It is an Asset of Cultural Interest.
Next to it is the old Episcopal Palace, currently home to the Gerona Art Museum.
Since the beginning of Christianity throughout this area, the city of Gerona was the seat of a bishopric that was based in the church of Santa María, managing at the same time the sanctuary of the martyr deacon San Félix; This sanctuary had been built over the tomb of said martyr, near the city wall. This small church of San Félix received Christian worship to replace that of Santa María when the Arabs appropriated it to convert it into a major mosque, in the year 717. Later, in 785, Gerona was conquered by the Franks, then under the authority of Charlemagne. In 882 the first community of canons was formed and in 908 the church was consecrated again.
The façade is baroque and was built in 1730. The central access staircase was built in 1607. Outside the cathedral, the Gothic portico of San Miguel, located to the north, and the portico of the Apostles to the south, from the 19th century, are preserved. 14th century and to which some sculptures were added in the 15th century. We must also highlight the Romanesque episcopal cathedral from the 11th century located above the main chapel; the main altarpiece, made of gilt silver and enamel, a masterpiece of Gothic goldsmithing made by Bartomeu between 1320 and 1357."
