"Teruel es un municipio y ciudad española situada en el sur de Aragón, capital de la provincia homónima. Con 36 267 habitantes (INE 2023), es la capital provincial menos poblada del país. Ubicada en la zona centro-oriental de la península ibérica, a una altitud de unos 915 m sobre el nivel del mar, se encuentra en la confluencia de los ríos Alfambra y Guadalaviar, conocido aguas abajo de la ciudad como Turia. Su clima se caracteriza por presentar inviernos muy fríos y veranos cálidos/templados y secos.
Según algunos autores, podría corresponder a la ciudad llamada por los fenicios Thorbat o Thorbet. También podría ser la Turba de los celtíberos, o la Túrbula mencionada por Ptolomeo.
Teruel estuvo poblada desde los tiempos de los celtíberos, los cuales llamaban al lugar Turboleta. El topónimo Turboleta podría venir del término vasco-íbero itur + olu + eta (lugar de fuente, manadero), según la teoría del vascoiberismo. Hay restos en el yacimiento del Alto Chacón. La zona fue ocupada posteriormente por los romanos, quedando restos en poblaciones cercanas, como los de Cella.
El 1 de octubre de 1171 el rey aragonés Alfonso II tomó Tirwal con la intención de reforzar la frontera meridional de su reino, que consideraba amenazada por la toma de la ciudad de Valencia por los almohades. Y en ese mismo año fundó la ciudad de Teruel, dotándola de fueros y privilegios para facilitar de este modo la repoblación de la zona."
